We’re almost two weeks into the season and before you hit the waiver wire to fill out the end of your team’s bench, you might want to think twice if you're considering selecting these guys – even though they’re numbers are respectable thus far.
Corey Brewer, Forward, Minnesota Timberwolves
Brewer has come back strong from an injury marred 2009 campaign and is easily on pace for the best season of his short career. The numbers on the surface are solid – 12.4 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2 steals. But keep in mind that he’s a career 38 percent field goal shooter and even though he’s connecting on only 24 percent of his 3-point attempts this year – he’s shooting more than 2 per game. His free throw shooting is also sub 65 percent. If you have a need for steals and can absorb the negatives he’s your guy, but in hotly contested leagues you have to pass on his talent.
Rasual Butler, Guard, Los Angeles Clippers
Butler is averaging 30+ minutes and is slated to see more starts in the near future. Reports are that second-year guard Eric Gordon will be out for a week and the team still needs offensive firepower with Blake Griffin sidelined. However, Butler is shooting only 30 percent from beyond the arc and 39 percent overall. He also won’t provide much in blocks or assists, but does consistently score double figures. He’s simply not worth the roster spot.
Larry Hughes. Guard, New York Knicks
If you’re a fantasy basketball veteran avoiding Hughes is a no brainer, though this season he looks enticing once again with averages of 14.8 points 4.3 boards and 4 assists. He is also shooting 48 percent from the floor which is solid for a two-guard. But you must remember that fantasy basketball is all about consistency and Hughes my man is about as reliable as a deadbeat parent. Remember that Hughes is a career 41 percent shooter so he’ll cool off eventually. Guys with 11 years of history rarely improve their shot percentages toward the tail end of their careers. If Allen Iverson couldn’t pull it off, why would you think Hughes could?
