The
Miami Herald reported earlier today that the fifth overall pick in this year’s
NBA Draft is headed back to Spain for the next two seasons.
Rubio will rejoin his Euroleague team – DKV Joventut. Further,
El Periodico, a Barcelona newspaper is reporting that Rubio will withdraw his lawsuit against the team, which was seeking to alter the buyout clause.
This makes sense for Rubio. His contract buyout would’ve been $6 million. Under the current rookie salary structure, attempting to pay the buyout total would’ve left Rubio in the negative financially.
So the Spaniard will likely not be in the NBA until the 2011-12 season, when he’ll only be 20 years old.
David Kahn has received a lot of heat for selecting point guards back-to-back in this year’s draft. Now the choice of taking Jonny Flynn with the sixth overall pick doesn’t seem as comical.
The
T-wolves now have two potential studs at point guard in a conference oozing with top tier floor generals, such as
Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Tony Parker and
Baron Davis. Flynn will get the keys from day one, while Rubio continues to develop, get stronger and hone his skills.
Now I see Kahn’s perspective, because if Rubio turns out to be a prodigy like he’s been touted, then with two more years of seasoning the Spaniard’s trade value will skyrocket. If that happens and Flynn comes out balling from the get go Kahn will be able to trade either one and get some excellent value in return.
Either way, Kahn might be owed some pretty loud apologies.
